Today’s guest is Caroline Mitchell, with her new book The Perfect Mother, which was released last month.

Hi, Caroline. Please describe your latest novel in one sentence. . .

She thought they wanted her baby. But they won’t stop there.

What three words would you use to describe yourself?

Optimist, creative, unique!

What is your main character called? What three words would you use to describe them?

Roz is my main character. She’s trusting, impulsive and pregnant!

Can you tell us one positive and one negative trait of your main character?

Roz is very loyal to her friend, Dympna. But she is equally stubborn and doesn’t listen to her friend’s warnings, much to her later regret.

What inspired you to write crime fiction?

I’m an ex-police detective so it seemed like the right fit. I enjoy getting into the minds of the perpetrator, which is why most of my books feature chapters from their perspective.

Who is your favourite crime author?

My favourite author always has been Stephen King. I love his characterisation. The man is a genius. But when I read a crime it’s by you, Mel Sherratt, and Angela Marsons, my favourite queens of crime. I love that there are so many women writing crime these days. Gone are the days of the hapless heroine. These female detectives are kicking arse!

What is your favourite book of theirs?

I love The Outsider by Stephen King. I’m currently watching the TV dramatisation and it’s brilliant.

Who is your favourite crime character or duo – film, TV, play or book?

I love the TV series Luther. Who doesn’t love a rule-bending bad boy?

Finally, tell me one weird and wonderful fact about yourself.

I’ve had some up close and personal experiences with the paranormal.

Thank you, Caroline and best of luck with The Perfect Mother! Here’s the blurb:

She thought they wanted her baby. But they won’t stop there.

Roz is young, penniless and pregnant. All she wants is to be the perfect mother to her child, but the more she thinks about her own chaotic upbringing, the more certain she is that the best life for her baby is as far away as possible from her hometown in Ireland.

Determined to do the right thing, Roz joins an elite adoption service and can’t believe her luck. Within days she is jetting to New York to meet a celebrity power couple desperate for a child of their own. Sheridan and Daniel are wealthy and glamorous—everything Roz isn’t. Her baby will never go hungry, and will have every opportunity for the perfect life. But soon after Roz moves into their plush basement suite, she starts to suspect that something darker lurks beneath the glossy surface of their home.

When Roz discovers she isn’t the first person to move in with the couple, and that the previous woman has never been seen since, alarm bells start ringing. As the clock ticks down to her due date, Roz realises her unborn baby may be the only thing keeping her alive, and that despite her best intentions, she has walked them both into the perfect nightmare…
